Mapping Syria's cultural sector in a post-conflict, transitional context — inside the country and across the diaspora.

OVERVIEW
As Syria moves through a fragile, transitional moment, its cultural sector — artists, institutions, community initiatives, and heritage actors — plays a quiet but vital role in resilience and dialogue. The British Council commissioned JRC to map that landscape, both inside Syria and across the diaspora, building a clear picture of who is creating, sustaining, and connecting culture in a post-conflict context.

ABOUT
A study of the people and practices that hold cultural life together — mapping networks, spaces, and the ways cultural work contributes to social cohesion.
APPROACH
Using qualitative and participatory methods, JRC mapped Syria's cultural networks, spaces, and practices — examining artistic production, cultural institutions, community-based initiatives, and heritage actors, and exploring how practitioners engage communities and contribute to social resilience and dialogue. The findings informed the British Council's strategic cultural programming and partnerships, helping ensure its interventions are locally grounded, inclusive, and aligned with cultural sustainability.
